BounceBot is a free service that automatically processes LetterRip bounce digests
and lets you know what email addresses to unsubscribe. It takes 99% of the pain
out of managing LetterRip mailing lists.
Here's how it works. You create a BounceBot account and configure it however you want.
You get to set a bunch of parameters that determine how agressive BounceBot is about
deciding an email address should be purged from your lists. Then you arrange for your
bounce digests to be sent to bouncebot@selfpromotion.com (I do it by
having my own email address as the list admin address, and using a Eudora filter to
forward the bounces to BounceBot). Then every so often, BounceBot will send you an
email with some unsubscribe suggestions; you then either unsubscribe them by hand or
(much easier) cut and paste them into an email you send to your LetterRip admin email
address. I could email your email admin directly but quite frankly I don't want to
know your passwords!
What I do. I maintain the BounceBot robot, including all the
templates that find email addresses in the bounce digests. Whenever BounceBot can't find
an email address in a bounce digest segment, it lets me know so I can update the templates.
Obviously, it's easier for one person to do this once than for everyone to do it for
themselves, so there's a real economy of scale. And since BounceBot can be updated in a
few minutes, you always have the latest version working for you.
What you do. Every 3 months or so you'll get an email reminding
you about how much work I do to keep this running, and generally making you feel really
guilty. Then you send me some money -- you choose how much -- to relieve those terrible
feelings of guilt. Simple, eh? If you don't pay, you can still use the service, but
the bad karma will pile up, and you'll live a short and unhappy life and probably come back
as something really icky. Or so my wife says. I, on the other hand, will rack up huge karma
points and come back as a higher life form -- perhaps even a woman. Or so my wife also says.
